Ground nutmeg weighs 112g per cup but is used in tiny amounts, typically a pinch to 1/4 teaspoon. Freshly grated whole nutmeg has a much stronger, more complex flavor than pre-ground. A whole nutmeg lasts years; pre-ground loses its aroma within six months. Nutmeg is traditional in bechamel sauce, eggnog, pumpkin pie, and spinach dishes. Large quantities can cause unpleasant side effects, so stick to recipe amounts. Store whole nutmegs in a sealed jar at room temperature.
